With the exception of Kona, all rental cars originate from their airport locations with the car rental company sending a shuttle to pick you up at the dock and take you back to the airport. Dollar sends out a shuttle bus automatically to meet the arrival of each cruise ship with the exception of Honolulu and Lahaina. Please note that the majority of the cruise ship lines allow passengers which have signed up for company sponsored activities (such as golf) to leave the ship first. Also, if your are not on a cruise ship sponsored activity, the ship will not wait for you when it is time to leave so please allow adequate time to return to the ship in a timely manner. Time/Distance: The harbor in Hilo is about ½ mile from the airport and the shuttle bus ride takes approximately 5 minutes. Honolulu Harbor is a 15 to 20 minute shuttle bus ride and can be affected by traffic. There are two major harbors on Maui, Kahului and Lahaina. Kahului harbor is about 5 miles from the airport and the ride should take about 15 minutes. In Lahaina, the ship docks outside the harbor and you get tendered into shore. The harbor is “U” shaped. You disembark on the right side and the pick up site is on the left side of the harbor across the street from the courthouse. The shuttle bus ride takes about 10 minutes but they only send a 12 passenger van and can only bring the driver back to the rental office. Don’t worry though, you are in prime shopping area here as you wait for the driver to return. Nawiliwili is the main harbor on the island of Kauai. Kauai’s airport is Lihue and it is located up the hill about 3 miles away. Again, I would expect a 10 to 15 minute shuttle bus ride here.
