Difficult Moves on Molokai

Molokai reflects old Hawaii more than any other accessible island. The north coast is often cited as Hawaii’s most dramatic. There is a lot of history to view like the Alii Fish Pond, cool throw back excursions like the Molokai Mule rides to Kalaupapa, and raw beauty found in places like the Halawa Valley.

With recent announcements, all this will be more difficult to explore.

For many years now, Budget and Dollar Rent A Car have had small locations at the Hoolehua Molokai Airport. As the economy began to fall dramatically in the fall of 2008, both Budget and Dollar have struggled mightily to reduce operational expenses in the light of greatly reduced levels of travel to Molokai.

Sadly, it wasn’t enough. Both Budget and Dollar will be closing their doors by the end of May 2009. Here’s how the closing process will work:

  • New reservations can be made to April 30, 2009. All vehicles must be returned on or before April 30th.

  • All existing reservations confirmed for pickup between now and May 15th will be honored; with returns scheduled on or before May 28, 2009.

  • Neither will be able to service existing reservations for pickup from May 16, 2009 and beyond.

Moving forward, Alamo has won a bid to establish a new rental location on Molokai at the airport. Location and final plans for fleet have not been established yet. They plan on opening the location sometime in June.

We would like to extend a warm “Mahalo” to everyone who has supported our rentals on Molokai in the past and we look forward to servicing your rental needs through Alamo in the future.
