Once you decide to tour Maui on your own, you will find several car rental agencies that will help you with your choice for the best type of vehicle for your ride.

All of the agencies have comparable prices; however, if you do not book your car in advance you may learn they do not have any vehicles left once you arrive. You should contact the car rental agency of your choice to ensure you have a car to tour around the island.

Once you have your car you are ready to hit the hot spots. The most popular points of interest on Mau are divided up into sections, which include Central Maui, South Maui, West Maui, East Maui, and Hana Highway.

Hot spots in Central Maui include Hawaii Nature Center, Bailey House Museum, Iao Valley State Park, and Maui Tropical Plantation. If you take a look around Central Maui, you will find more to do than you can imagine. Central Maui is home to Wailuku, Kahului, and the Kahului Harbor. Happy Valley can be found off highway 330; the Bailey House Museum can be seen on highway 320 on your way to the ‘Iao Valley and Needle. However, before you head off you should also take the kids to the skateboard park on Kanaloa Road, visit the War Memorial across the street, and then see the Maui Arts and Cultural Center on Wahinepio. If golf is your favorite past time, then head off to the Dunes at Maui Lani Golf Course for 18 holes.

South Maui is the home to many resorts, sunny beaches, and even more fun. There are many famous beaches that attract visitors from all over the world, which include Ma’alaea Bay, Kama’ole Beach, Charley Young Beach, Kama’ole III, Keawakapu Beach, Mokapu Beach, Ulua Beach, Wailea Beach, Polo Beach, Palauea Beach, and Maluaka Beach to name just a few. If you love the water and beaches then South Maui will give you plenty to do while you drive and visit each and every beach in the area. Have fun with some snorkeling or scuba diving adventures before you get back on the road.

South Maui offers more than just beaches and water fun. You can also enjoy fine dining such as Ferraro’s at the Four Season, Makena Grill on Makena Alanui Road, and Life’s a Beach on S. Kihei Rd.

West Maui is home to McGregor Point and Lighthouse along with many other wonderful attractions. West Maui has always had the reputation of being the playground for the rich and famous and when you are talking about sights to see you will know why. Other attractions you should not miss include Pali Cliffs on highway 300, the town of Olowalu where you will see the unique petroglyphs, the beautiful park of Launiupoko on the shoreline, Lahaina Town, Black Rock Beach, Kahekili Beach Park and Napili Bay.

East Maui or what some call the area South East Maui is home to the spectacular “Ohe’o Gulch or what mainlanders call it “7 Sacred Pools”.

Hana Highway may be the most self-guided driving tour in all of Maui. Along this stretch of highway, you will be able to stop and see some of the most magnificent waterfalls in all of Hawaii. However, there are not many places to eat along the way except in a few small towns.
